Refugee Concert

Germany has received a huge number of migrants over the past several years.  Many of these are refugees from Syria and Iraq with humanitarian protection.  As is common in many cities throughout the world, large numbers of migrating ethnic groups live together in enclaves.  In the middle of Berlin is Sonnenneallee, which is known as "Arab Street" and is filled with Turkish and Arab markets, bakeries, shops, and restaurants. It is a wonderful place for people watching, shopping, and getting great Arabic food.  Most refugees are supported by the government for a 6-month period of transition.  During this period, they take language classes, are given simple living quarters, and provided support in finding a job.  In addition, a whole range of volunteer and NGO organizations provide help as well.  One particular organization is called "MitMachMusik" and offers free music lessons and instruments to refugee children.  Because most of these children are beginners, the organization brings in more skilled musicians to help guide them during concerts and performances.  Last week, Peter took on such a role and played first violin with a group of refugees at their temporary quarters in a Berlin suburb.  Enjoy the concert!
