Happy Birthday Marines!

The Marine Corps celebrated its 238th birthday on November 10, and we celebrated in style yesterday at the annual "Birthday Ball."  The evening began with a solemn and moving presentation of the history of the Marine Corps and remembrance of Marines past and present.  All those Marines and other service members attending the ball were recognized with loud applause, as were their spouses, who we know also serve at their side.  Then came the cake cutting ceremony, where the huge birthday cake was wheeled in and  cut with a sword (!).  After the ceremony we enjoyed a fabulous meal, which I soon felt in my fitted party dress :)  and it was on to the dance floor until past midnight (unheard of!).  This morning I was thinking that maybe jumping in high heels ("Jump Around!") was not such a great idea.  In any case, we were honored and happy to attend the birthday bash!

Veteran's Day

http://www.flandersfieldsmiracle.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/poppy2.jpg

I love this holiday, as sorrowful as it is, because it asks each of us to remember those who fought and died, or suffered wounds, both the physical and emotional, in service to their country.  Being from an immigrant family that fled Europe during World War II, my parents made sure I understood what that entailed.  But that war that happened before I was born was history for me.  Veteran's Day has become much different and more personal since I lost one of my dear friends and college mates, Major David G. Taylor Jr., who was killed fighting in Iraq in October 2006. I miss him terribly still, and his wife Michelle and son Jake are always in my thoughts and prayers.  David's funeral occurred close to Veteran's Day, and all of us who attended received the traditional red poppy to wear, and the famous poem, "In Flanders Fields" was read at the service.   I never knew exactly where the poppy tradition came from until then.  The poem is beautiful, but tough if you have raw grief, or even grief that is still right there seven years later.  But I still like to read it as a tribute to my friend and all those I did not know.   Here it is for you, a Veteran's Day gift, with a short explanation on the history of the poem.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Play Ball!

Our little guys are taking up a new sport; one not commonly played in this part of the world.  This is unfortunate because the weather right now is perfect for playing ball.  Swing batter!

Thinking Ahead

So, as part of our "traveler" lifestyle, we have to research and apply on our next position at least a year in advance, often more if there is additional training associated with the job.  So when that time comes you start looking at what's out there, and you get inquiries from folks who are looking to succeed you in your current job - take over the reins once you leave.  Believe it or not, we just identified that person today!  Even though I am just shy of halfway through my time here, we already know who is going to replace me.  Of course this got me thinking of all the possibilities out there for us, including coming back to home turf, which would also be wonderful.  But this kind of thinking can be a little dangerous over the years, because it's tempting to always focus on the future, fantasize about what is ahead, instead of enjoying the present moment, focusing on the task you currently have before you, as well as the small joys you can experience each day.  So, I will contain myself, and not think about slinging across the globe, but take a moment to observe and have awareness of my extremely blessed lot in life that I can enjoy today, even right now.

Let's Get Real

The last few posts of Musafareen have shown some of our weekend adventures, and indeed the whole blog does make our time in Oman look like one giant vacation. I remarked about this one day to my family and said I needed a picture of me at  my desk typing away, with my half eaten lunch, and last bit of the morning's coffee (now cold) sitting on the desk (never quite get a chance to finish it) because that is what a lot of my days look like!  And given the non-stop pace of work and some tough staffing gaps at my office, our last year here has been pretty challenging (ok, let's just say HARD) professionally.

One weekend we had an urgent project and we worked out of my boss' house, and voila, I got a picture of me actually working.  While it appears that the fine young Marine and I are consulting on the substance of my work, he is actually helping me figure out how to hack into the laptop because I couldn't get to Word (thus my grimace).  One of his buddies took the picture for me, and I think he said something like "Ok you two, try to look important!" before he snapped the photo.
So thank you U.S. Marines for helping me finally get my picture!

Cancer Awareness Walk

The whole family participated in fantastic event, the local Cancer Association's annual cancer walk, to raise public awareness of cancer.  Thousands of people came together to a beautiful city park to participate. Unfortunately cancer still has a lot of shame and stigma attached to it here, and people do not talk about, forgoing prevention and early treatment that could save lives.  The walk is one way the organizers of the event are trying to raise awareness and get people talking - they even had a mobile mammography unit on site to show folks it's not a big deal.  I am proud of the men in my life (big and small!) who also participated in this important event.

Happy Halloween!

Even though we are several thousand miles from home, this did not stop us from putting on costumes, carving pumpkins and going trick-or-treating on Halloween night. I hope you are impressed with our jack-o-lantern.  The price was impressive too, $36!!! Yes, these were genuine carving pumpkins shipped from the USA for all the crazy foreigners like us who of course will pay these prices!  The thing is, because we are in this exotic land, it is the small things like carving the Halloween jack-o-lantern that are so important to keeping us, especially the boys, connected to our beloved traditions.

With Batman and ferocious tiger at my side, this butterfly will be alright!
