To catch a break from the afternoon heat we set out exploring and found a beachfront Starbucks! Here are a few pics of us standing in front of it. Inside, it looks just like one from home - except for some of the men and women you can glimpse in the background in their traditional outfits. The men wear long white robes with either a small embroidered cap or multi-colored turban wrapped around the head. They look so smart, and much cooler and more comfortable than the westerners in suits. Omani women often wear floor length black robes over their clothes and black or colored scarves over their hair. My observation is that they often wear spike heels or high platform shoes and fancy clothes underneath - even in the heat they dress UP to go out. They also pile their hair up on their head and use big plastic clips so the scarf stays put and makes a kind of a tall headress. Make-up is perfect. Perfume and tasteful jewellery and appropriate handbag are part of the outfit. Basically they look very elegant. Now don't forget we are talking about upper and middle class women of the city - it's different in the villages, where we have yet to venture.
